Niibin Summer FloralsCommon Milkweed. Shaaboosigan Aniibiishan. Choke Cherry. Asasaweminan. Harebell. Adota’gon. Strawberry. Ode’iminan. Blueberry. Miinan. Sunflower. Giizis Waabigwan. White Sage. Mashkodewashk. I am in awe at how lovely Serene looked on her beautiful day. I feel I can finally release the breathe I have been holding in since the day she asked me to create her vision. This dress is more than I could even imagined, I loved bringing her idea to life with intention, purpose and love. Each plant holds intention to the Great Lakes Region as an expression to Serenes work at our community's Tribal Natural Resource Department. The center front bodice red milkweed represents her Native name, Red Flower Woman, Miskowaabigwankwe (spelling is varied). I ensured strategically giving her the custom dress of her dreams because she deserved so, a modern translation through two traditions of the formal wedding dress and Native American culture into one interwoven gown. Speaking to the role as Native women in contemporary society, their importance and validation. We celebrate your significance because your still here. Everyday, every experience, every motion forward, the mobility to live and love is an awareness to culture. You exceed expectations of our ancestors before us. A recognition of their fight runs through your blood, the light even through darkness that you carry on to your babies. Congratulations again to the new Mr. & Mrs. Gauthier!
