HELLO AND WELCOME.

Elegant hand-crafted jewelry featuring natural materials, inspired by the beautiful environment of the Great Lakes region.
I carry my storytelling from my metalsmith studio on the Rez into other intimate spaces as an installation artist, sculptor, maker and now writer. My heart remains stolen by Michigan's Upper Peninsula woods and I belong to the Ojibwa Keweenaw Bay Indian Community. I create contemporary storytelling through wearables and tangible objects layered in generational trauma, healing, and hope. My influence comes from the reservation shaped by my roots, the natural world, and a fascination of post-colonization and the decolonial memory. My work celebrates and promotes survival narratives, to bring awareness of the resilience of bodies of color.  My movement on and off the reservation has led to the study of looking at Native mobilization and the superpowers of legacy.

I'm Tashina

Clearing of the sky cloud woman. Misanaquadikwe.
I tell stories weaving a new lens on to the mobility of Native America, representing the forces of Natives leaving the rez, crossing borders, from the static and entrapped, moving out of spaces meant for erasure. Investigating as I travel, learning the tools and systems that actively are at work on both the reservation and outside worlds. A statement of resilience, glorifying my optimism navigating my dual citizenship as an involuntary designated diplomat. Seven pounds five ounces, head thick of hair, being born Native means I’m born political. Tashina navigates the edge of two worlds and developed fluidity between the two: a small town Native girl from the rez and the city cosmopolitan, now in New York City. The attention to each space, the blessing to move about these spaces, but also the dangerousness that exists from power pressures on the rez and the western world separately and combined. At the limit of each, there in the center is where I don't entirely feel apart of either.

My work is the raw edges of the middle, my own uncensored truth, and purposeful imperfections distinct in all of my creations, where those two worlds meet. My originals are tender transparencies and delicate layers of resilience, lasting and hold an overwhelming presence of history and spirit. Recently, my movement on and off the reservation has led to the study of looking at Native mobilization and the superpowers of legacy. I write agency. Teach agency. Sculpt agency. Sew agency. Weave agency. Bead agency. Create and share agency. I clear the sky of clouds.
