Sewing For Fall, WIPS!

Capes, Embroidery, Plaid, & Jean Fix-ups

How it all starts!

Usually it's a browse on Pinterest or therapeutic online window shopping that helps get the creative juices flowing. Right now, in the studio I have big plans or WIP's (which stands for "works in progress"). The few fall must haves and fix-ups I have come up with are statement pieces to complete any look. I am already picturing how I will style them and what boots to pair them with!

From the inspiration comes motivation and action, I then begin to sketch out the simple design/ shapes of the garment or object. I say object because I noticed jewelry designing and clothing fabrication are very similar. Working out the bigger picture and breaking it down into smaller projects is my favvv part of my system when fabricating clothing or jewelry. For example, I'll be inspired by a Miley Cyrus crop top and put a little doodle together, then go right into construction by breaking it down into: front bodice, back bodice, neck finishing, arm-hole finishing, and bottom hem. Working on each piece and puzzling it together to form a sexy, fun crop! The sequence/order is key and figuring out the operation that is my favorite, so once my inspirations turn to sketches, and sketches to small goal, and finally my small goals turn into lists. Check lists that I can check off until completion!
We're not even to the sewing part yet! Next, is the size adjusting, pattern prep, fabric prep, and cutting where you cut out tangible pieces to actually sew (to put it in similar terms). For now, here is what I have sourced and I am so excited to also share what garments will make stylish closet additions!

Cape or Cloak Coat: Soooo witchy, I know right and fabulous for fall! I was very inspired by this old Los Ojos Cloak on Pendleton by Lindsey Thornburg. I plan on spicing it up a bit and making it my own. Plus, I found this 90's Cape and Wrap pattern that will help me get the right size in when constructing. The pattern will work as a helpful outline for getting exactly what I want.
Pattern and Sample Sketches:

Pendleton Blanket
A spunky Pendleton Blanket, I would like to one day sew with, but I absolutely do not want to have to cut into! It is so beautiful, I actually got this blanket as a gift from my University of Michigan Graduation. I will wait to work with this material until I have the pattern and sizing perfected. You can see the full blanket on the Pendleton Site! Check it out, the blanket it double sided!

Fleece Blanket
This fleece blanket, I bought from the U of M Mother Earth Powwow will work great as a wearable muslin coat. I will be able to breathe a little more while working with this fabric, instead of going straight to the Pendleton. They are purposefully similar because I am still hesitant to even work with the above blanket. *Secret* I may have to just keep it as a little cozy cover!

Jean Fix-Ups: Ripped up jeans aren't exactly ideal for the cold weather in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, so that is why I am transforming them with patches. It is a little funny how both jeans, which are different brands, happen to have holes in the same exact places. I want to attach a patch on the inside of the jeans and embroider a bit around the edges to add a contemporary touch.

Peplum Top: I have had this piece of plaid for a year now and tried to make a knit peplum with it! After not getting it exactly the way I pictured it in my head, I decided to seam rip it off and start fresh with this ivory nude color. The plaid gathers really well so creating the top bodice pieces shouldn't take long, then I just have to attach them together! I been scavenging Pinterest for some cute ideas and want to go with the 3/4 sleeve peplum!

Embroidered Fabric: This fabric had me like OoOOOooo! I seriously had to have it. Now I can't decide which should be the wrong-side or right-side, they are both gorgeous. I think I might just have mix it up and try to use both! I do know for certain, I want to make a flowy, classy top for work.

I can't wait to get started! I think I'm going to start on the jeans first and work my way to the cape, wish me luck! Make sure to follow along to see how all the garments turn out.
Share your ideas! I would love to hear!
*Coming Soon* Official business name reveal.

The final product is beautiful. It all started with the pretty Native style blankets and turned into a beautiful, stylish jacket. I like the sweater your top picture.
